When Götze came back to Dortmund three years ago, a long ordeal began for him. Due to numerous injuries and a metabolic disorder he had to accept his role as a permanent spectator. The midfielder has now fought his way out of his physical low. In 2018/19, BVB once again saw Mario Götze, who the football world wanted to see. He scored goals, prepared goals and constantly demanded the ball. His standing in the team even earned him the position of vice captain behind Marco Reus. Mario Götze is once again the valuable kicker who led Dortmund 2011 and 2012 to the surprising championships. Nevertheless, after his fantastic year with Black-Yellow, he could be thinking intensively about a change. The reason for this are the new additions to his BVB. They brought Julian Brandt from Leverkusen and Thorgan Hazard from Mönchengladbach and put Götze in front of strong competition.
Brandt and Hazard are joined in the offensive by Paco Alcacer, Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho. Despite the departure of Christian Pulisic to FC Chelsea, the Dortmunders have too many players for the attack to guarantee Götze the usual playing time. Actually, the runners-up wanted to extend their contract, which expires in summer 2020. According to rumours, however, they are to demand that Götze accept salary losses of about 20 percent. His balance is thus to drop from ten to now more than eight million euros. This reduction as well as the purchases by Brandt and Hazard have made Götze pensive. Mr. Götze had hoped for more appreciation from his club and does not seem to want to extend his contract. “I’ll see how the situation develops over the season, what role I play, what role club and coach see me in,” said the 27-year-old when asked when he would sign a new contract.
